Ethika positions itself as "a leading lifestyle brand" rather than just an underwear company. Scrolling through their Instagram account for a few seconds will show you what they mean. Just as often as they show pictures of their undies and other products, they're showcasing athletes, championships, skaters, bands, punks, performers, music, and even the occasional pug. Rather than featuring chiseled underwear models with seductive gazes, their Instagram looks more like the cool kids and rebels hanging out after school. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ethika (@ethika) on To be honest, at first, I was a bit incredulous about their underwear. They didn't seem to be emphasizing the comfort and quality of their products, and I got the impression that the core of their marketing campaign was "look, we're edgy and we hire edgy artists to make the designs for our underwear." It had bro culture vibes. Okay. Go ahead and remind me to not judge a book by its cover. The more I've followed along with their brand, the more impressed I've been with both their culture and their products. What I once interpreted as overly bro-focused I now understand as being more along the lines of "no f*cks to give." Ethika has been making a splash in the underwear industry, and for good reason. Their underwear is amazing, they feature diverse bodies in their advertising, and they're not trying to sell their underwear on raw sexual energy. Instead, they're making waves by focusing on the people who are also making waves within their communities, no matter how big or small those communities may be, and who just happen to be wearing their underwear. I'll start by discussing theirstyle since, in my opinion, it's a bit of a mixed bag. For starters, Ethika's biggest style strength is their abundance of designs. They work with a variety of brands and artists to come up with some really cool graphic prints. Their designs are unique, and you're unlikely to find similar designs elsewhere. Plus, their underwear can introduce you to some really cool artists to follow, which is always a plus.

Style Weakness: Limited Options in Cut, Few Options for Toned-Down Prints
That said, when I find an underwear brand I particularly like, I want to be able to get a few different pairs and styles of underwear so that I can wear them for different occasions.
The emphasis on graphic print is great for casual daily wear, workouts, and lounging at home. It's not always great for date night or other instances where you want underwear that's sexy and sophisticated.
On top of that, they don't carry brief cuts or shorter trunks. They have their "Mid" line, which is the length of a conventional trunk, but they're still fairly long and modest. It makes it easier for the awesome prints to be shown off, but if you want something shorter to wear under tighter pants or shorter gym shorts, you may be lacking in options.
Ethika's lack of brief options is a detractor for me, but their trademark slim waistband that sits flat against the skin and their minimalist-yet-eye-catching stitching are both fantastic accents and givetheirunderwear a clean, sporty look.
Underwear Quality and Comfort- How Does Ethika's Underwear Feel?
Let's shift from what I like least about Ethika's underwear to what I like most: their quality and comfort.
When you first grab a pair of theirunderwear, they feel like athleticwear. They're primarily made of sleek, thin fabric and have a narrow waistband that fits flush against the skin.
The first pair that I bought was the Modal- Navy Gold Lurex. Modal is one of those fabrics that youneedin your underwear drawer. It feels very silky and smooth to the touch. When blended with elastane, like in Ethika's underwear, it fits snugly against the skin, holding everything in place and maintaining its shape really well.
This Underwear Is Very Comfortable and Doesn't Get Bunched Up Under Jeans
The result is silky underwear that holds its shape well and doesn't get bunched up throughout the day. From the time you put them on to the time you take them off, they're going to remain flush with your skin and aren't going to be a problem under your pants, whether you're in gym shorts or a three-piece suit.
I'd know. I've worn mine under both.
Price- How Much Does Ethika's Underwear Cost?
When it comes to price, Ethika is kind of middle-of-the-road. They're not as expensive as a luxury brand like Atelier Traditionnel, but they're also expensive enough that you're not going to want to buy more than a pair or two at a time unless you're really in to splurging on underwear.
For example, the modal trunks that I bought retail for $26. Luckily, I bought them during a promotional sale, so I only paid $18 for them, but when I went to buy more to add to my collection (a sign of how I feel about their quality), I was disappointed to see how much it would cost to add multiple pairs to my underwear drawer.
So, if you find Ethika on sale or go to their website during a promotional period, don't be afraid to stock up and get several pairs. You'll be glad you did, especially once they go back up to normal price.
Update: June 2022– How Well Does Ethika's Underwear Hold Up?
It has been over three years since I initially wrote this review.
Three years is a long time for a pair of underwear to last. And yet... I'm still wearing my Ethika trunks.
For the sake of full transparency, they aren't in perfect shape. The legs and butt are a little stretched out, and the fabric is getting thin and frayed in the crotch. There are a few places along the waistband that are showing broken threads too.
While they're a bit beat up now, it's incredibly impressive that they're still wearable and don't look completely ratty this far along. Since the pair that I purchased was pretty monochromatic, I can't speak to how colorfast the graphic prints are on other pairs, but if they're comparable to these, they should last a while when you follow care instructions.
Having originally written this review in 2019, I wanted to amend the original score that I gave my Ethika trunks so long ago.
In my first review, I said that these were a 3.5 out of 5, and my main gripes were that they had limited cut options (I'd still love to seebriefs one day) and that the modal-cotton blend wasn't as luxurious as higher-end options.
In retrospect, I think I'd give Ethika closer to a 4.5 out of 5. The fact that they've lasted so well and held their shape for three years is worth bragging about. Plus, I now recognize that the modal-cotton blend is great because you still get a comfortable pair of underwear, but it's more durable than pure modal and it's able to be sold at a more affordable price.
All-in-all, I definitely think this is the kind of underwear you can't go wrong with purchasing.

How long should men's underwear last? It's been said that the average pair of men's underwear lasts about seven years. However, it's recommended that men replace their underwear once every 6-12 months.
Underwear, socks and undershirts should be washed after every use, while bras can be worn 3-4 times before washing. Since underwear, socks and undershirts are in close contact with your skin and sweat, washing them after every use keeps them smelling fresh.
Average pair of underwear owned by men ranges between 8-10. Ideally, you should have between 15 to 20 pairs of underwear for ease and comfort. At any given time, there should be at least 10-12 fresh pair of underwear in your closet.

Top critical review. I love the Ethika boxers! However, pay close attention to the material! These ones are all polyester - not the super comfy cotton that i was expecting!

You might develop foul odour
The discharge and moisture buildup on the underwear throughout the day provides for an excellent breeding ground for bacteria, yeast, and fungi that are often contaminated with faecal and urine matter.
Most experts recommend buying new underwear as often as every 6 to 12 months, however, there's really no definitive answer as there are many factors to consider when determining your current underwear's lifespan.
“As long as you're washing and disinfecting your underwear, and they're mechanically functional, with no holes, and they're not soiled, you can keep those,” Tierno says. “When they become frayed or the elastic stops working, you'll know to replace them."
Change your underwear after intense physical activity and before going out for social events, right after shower, that is. You should change your underwear on a daily basis, period. Consider fully replacing your underwear once a year.
Many doctors say a daily shower is fine for most people. (More than that could start to cause skin problems.) But for many people, two to three times a week is enough and may be even better to maintain good health.
However, if you've had underwear hanging around for a decade, they've well exceeded their lifespan. Regardless of whether it's women's underwear or men's bamboo underwear (Don't get us started on the boxers vs. briefs debate!), most recommendations for how often to replace underwear are between 6 to 12 months.
Men's underwear should fit snug - not tight - around the waist and thighs while providing breathing room in the crotch; in other words, you should feel comfortable, but not feel cramped. Underwear that's too tight can lead to chafing, rashes, skin irritation, and general discomfort.
"If you look after your underwear properly, you can extend its life expectancy. However, as a general rule, underwear should be replaced every six to 12 months. Depending on the level of soiling, you may want to consider upgrading as soon as three months, to avoid excessive bacteria build up."
In simple terms, pouch underwear is a category of men's underwear, generally boxer briefs, that features a specially designed pouch that separates your "manhood" from your thighs. The idea behind pouch underwear is that it is intended to prevent chafing.

"Cotton is the best choice for optimal breathability when it comes to underwear," says Debra Jaliman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in NYC. "Cotton is absorbent, and anything other than cotton will trap heat and moisture." But it's not just about comfort. "Cotton underwear helps prevent yeast infections, too."
Polyester and nylon are popular for high performance pieces. They are both hard-wearing and stretchy fibres, moving with you no matter the activity. Polyester also wicks away moisture and sweat, unlike cotton, which absorbs it all, so you will stay dry.
In fact, men have said that briefs are “the most comfortable” as it gives them more freedom to move around, the flexibility to do whatever they need to do in their daily lives.
Fundoshi - Japan's Traditional Underwear
Fundoshi are the traditional Japanese underwear made by wrapping a long cloth about the body. There are various ways in which it can be wrapped and knotted, and they can be made from many different types of material too.
Underwear, especially briefs, bikinis, and thongs, should fit snugly, but it shouldn't leave imprints in the skin.
Your body shape can have a direct bearing on your physique, but so too does your underwear. Bikini briefs, hipster briefs, high-waisted briefs … All styles of underwear will give your booty a slightly different shape.
If it's falling down, your underwear is either too big for you, or not the right style. You either need to size down or look for a higher-rise style with wider elastic at the top.
Cotton is the best choice. Because its breathable. You dont want to be sweaty and itchy down there. Wear breathable fabrics and get your inner game strong.
Slightly more than half the men wore boxers; the rest wore briefs, boxer briefs, bikinis, or other tight-fitting underwear. Chavarro and his colleagues found that men who mostly wore boxers had seventeen per cent more sperm and a twenty-five-per-cent higher concentration of them than men who preferred tight underwear.

Choose A Pair For Your Body Type
There are 5 types of body shapes - thin, fit, muscular, wide hips and a large waist. Briefs are better designed for men with thin, fit and muscular body types. Trunks look great on men who are thin, fit, muscular and have wide hips.
Blood tests also showed no association between underwear choices and testosterone levels. There was a difference in another hormone, known as FSH, or follicle stimulating hormone. That hormone, produced by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain, stimulates sperm production in men.
They Are the Go-To Underwear for That Date Night
Trunks are short, slim fitting, and complimenting to any figure but especially those with shorter legs. Accentuate your thigh muscles: even if you have missed a few leg days, wearing trunks will draw the attention to the right places and make you look strong and sexy.
And Here's Why. Japanese men are starting to wear men's brassieres as a means to alleviate stress. In a recent episode of JTBC's global guest talk show, Non-Summit, Japanese panel member Ogi Hitoshi revealed that men's brassieres were becoming a trend popular in Japan.
A fundoshi (褌 or ふんどし), meaning loincloth in Japanese, is the traditional type of underwear, mainly for men.
Are briefs back in style? Absolutely. With all types of cuts and materials that appeal to a variety of demographics, briefs have made their comeback known and look to be here to stay.
